Selecting New Leaders 2 – Chairman, President, Governor, Legislators for a club, association, union, Country / State is a subject of great concern. Each time I teach on leadership qualities and competencies or I’m dedicating emerging leaders, I always ask the audience this question: ‘If you are to select by vote or otherwise a new set of leaders – the President, state or county Governor/premier, federal and state Legislators, local council chairmen and councilors for your Country, State/county and local government [municipal] for the next tenure, what will form the basis for your selection?’ You will laugh at the avalanche of suggestions they’ll proffer for their choice. They cannot be wrong, it is their perception, and perception they say, is real.
Over the years, their answers to that question have built up my list of competencies people should possess to be good cum, great political leaders. Their lists point to what qualifies them and most times to qualities expected of political leaders.
More importantly, their lists also give me glimpses into their viewpoint that most of us [people, you and I] don’t know or understand how a good leader looks like talk less of a great leader or even what is great political leadership. This is tragic and painful and points to the fact that realizing our corporate desired purposeful future is far from achieving it [unless God intervenes, but does God do such?].
These two – qualifies [prerequisite for ascent] and qualities [requirements for staying, sustainability] is not [always] easily demarcated, but they are certainly not the same.
But let me ask you reading me, ‘if you are to select a new set of political leaders [politicians] for your Country, State/county, and local government [municipal] for the next tenure, what will form the basis for your selection?’
