Leaders and Discernment

The Bible

Leaders Ought Not Lack Discernment

Leaders and DiscernmentOn Leaders and Discernment, See;

So, David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” (2 Samuel 12:13)

Like Prophet Samuel before him, the prophet Nathan served as a leader to leaders. God used Nathan to correct his erring leader. One of the erring leaders was David, the king. Nathan could act as he did because of his keen, God-given discernment. Leaders cannot be without discernment.

Most leaders we have in Nigeria and Africa cannot discern fake and false aides. Therefore, sycophancy and eye service sell in our society like a hot cake.

Discernment goes deeper than knowledge. It can resemble intuition, another great skill a leader needs to have. At times, discernment is a gift; at other times, it results from much experience. Discernment brings a profound perception of what is occurring or happening, either on the outside or the inside of a person.

When a leader lacks discernment his ministers, aides, appointees even other elected officers take advantage of it and sabotage the government or management.

How Can Discernment Be Enhanced?

Discernment can be enhanced.  To improve your discernment as a leader:

  1. Learn to hear God’s voice – Get quiet and read Scripture. Reflect on the mind of God. Why? Discernment is more of a gift from God than other avenues of acquiring it.
  2. Build problem-solving skills – If you can see the root issues of problems, you can solve those difficulties and hence can discern root issues in those areas.
  3. Analyze your successes – What worked? Can you identify the heart of the matter? Be analytic [deep thinking].
  4. Evaluate your options – Discernment involves both your gut and your head. Learn to use your head. Think vastly and verse.
  5. Expand your opportunities – Get more experience to help you deepen your wisdom. There’s safety in experience, all the same.
  6. Explore what others think – Choose leaders you admire and study how they think and act.
  7. Listen to your gut – Most people are afraid to listen to their God-given intuition. Guts can be gifts.
