As a Budding Entrepreneur, Act Now and Listen.
Jean Buridan, the 16th-century French Philosopher, once told the story of how a bundle of hay and a bucket of water were put an equal distance before a hungry and thirsty donkey. Still, just because the animal could not decide which to choose first between the water and hay, it eventually died of thirst and hunger! Imagine!
Just like the donkey, one’s indecision or decision not to create and profitably execute a business idea today can completely jeopardize the potential of a great business idea or create difficulty in the way of a great enterprise. This is more critical in a society where everything is collapsing like ours.
When one decides to create and profitably execute a business idea, a few steps need to be taken before the start of the business.
Step 1 is Personal evaluation.
Do an honest personal evaluation of yourself and your circumstances, if you don’t have the personal qualities to start and run a business, you can go for training and mentorship or allow trusted and experienced business managers to set up and handle the day-to-day management of the business without undue interference.
Step 2 is Asking Yourself Pertinent Questions.
In life, No Question, No Answer, No Discovery.
The questions can be;
- Ask yourself the reason why you want to start a business. Is it money, freedom, creativity, or some other reason? All the same, I encourage people to set up businesses even if they’re paid N10m per month. Nothing is permanent, your job may be lost any day. It is fulfilling to try out your ideas and see them to fruition.
- What skills or professional certifications do you have? You must have something you do at ease with great dexterity: SKILL.
- What industries do you know about? This is party TRENDY and partly knowing where to START.
- Would you want to provide a service or a product? What do you like to do? Take your time to sort out this but be fast.
- On what projects and initiatives does your conscience inspire you?
- How much capital do you have to risk? How will you raise it? How will you manage it? Money requires a lot of Management i.e., why we have FINANCE, which is the management of money.
- Will it be a full-time or a part-time venture? This is the nature of your engagement.
Your answers to these types of questions will help you narrow your focus.
